Cross Country

I tried Nordic, or cross-country, skiing for the first time today.
It mostly made me feel like I was trying to run on ice.
Fun but exhausting, it's definitely a full-body deal.
The best part was being out in the mountain forest,
with feet of brilliant white fresh powder,
towering trees decorated with frost,
quiet solitude and tranquility.
Of course it's fun to fly down the mountain downhill,
but on these skis I felt like I had the time to really appreciate it.

Cannabis Cup

If I couldn't be with my family for Thanksgiving,
I would definitely want to be a judge in the Cup!
I've been to Amsterdam many times
(how many I probably can't remember!),
but I've never been there for the famous Cannabis Cup.
I guess that always leaves me a reason to go back!
These Cups belong to Barney's,
who's strain Tangerine Dream was the
winner of the 2010 Cannabis Cup!

Happy Thanksgiving

for my family
for my health
for my family's health
for my past
for my present
for my future
for my friends
for my freedom
for a cozy bed
for the trees
for my eyes
for my legs
for my heart
for my brain
for home-cooked food
for good wine
for laughter
for silence
for you
for me
for love
for faith
for hope
thank you baby jesus

The high yesterday was 27°F
and a low of -4°F
in Bend, Oregon
which is damn cold
for a southern Californian!

Greek House

I have long been attracted to the old more than the new.
This house seemed to me to have so much character.
I love how the walls have developed their own color medley,
and the natural and artificial have fused into one.

This is on the Greek island of Corfu.

I passed this on my way to Andorra,
where a bottle of Absinthe will cost you 5 bucks.

La Sagrada Familia

When asked why construction of the church would take so long,
Gaudi said that "God is not in a hurry."
Barcelona's Sagrada Familia was begun in 1882
and won't be complete for at least another 15 or 20 years.
Antoni Gaudi's massive creation was consecrated
and proclaimed a Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI on November 7.

San Gimignano's Beauties

The old folks in Europe often spend their days standing in the street
or sitting on a bench and talking to their friends as they pass by.
But no matter what, they always get dressed up to do it!
These ladies in San Gimignano in Tuscany were very friendly,
but I did once have a conversation with one old lady
during which she told me how awful it is that girls wear pants these days,
and how that's the reason there are so many gay men!
Never mind that it was 30 degrees outside!
That's just a wimpy excuse, she told me.

Niki's Lips

I was first introduced to Niki de Saint Phalle at UCSD
where her large bird sculpture is our revered Sun God.
I read somewhere that she was from Neuilly Sur Seine,
the same neighborhood in Paris where I lived for a few years during my childhood.
I appreciated her colorful curvy creations and found delight in each new project I discovered,
like these famous lips near Centre Pompidou in Paris.

L'Homme du 13eme

This was a guy I was chatting with in the Chinatown of Paris.
I use the chatting word lightly because even though we were both talking,
I didn't understand a single word he said.
He seemed to be having a good time though!

The south of France is unbelievable charming and beautiful.

Costa Brava

I took this picture of Spain's Costa Brava,
along a scenic drive from Barcelona to Perpignan.
It looks a bit like California's coast, huh?

Hot Air

If you look really closely you can see my family in that picture!
I was in another balloon with my cousins, sister, and brother-in-law, and of course the random couple that got engaged while we were floating above the clouds.  I found it to be a little scary to be in a balloon up in the clouds, but it was really fun to be outside way up there.
This was in Del Mar, California, one of the popular spots for ballooning.

Highway 1

Big Sur, California
I don't care where I live as long as there is some water around.
But a coast like this couldn't hurt!
